Police investigating an alleged attempted abduction of a girl who was on a school excursion at a popular Melbourne tourist spot last month have released images of a man who may be able to assist in their inquiries.

The 14-year-old was walking in a group at Hosier Lane about 10.30am on 15 November when an unknown man approached her and allegedly tried to drag her away, Victoria police said on Wednesday.

She was saved by a good Samaritan who intervened by pretending to be a teacher, allowing her to escape the man’s grasp, police said.

The girl was not physically hurt and the man and the woman he was with immediately left the area.

Victoria police described the man as having dark-coloured skin and a slim build. He was wearing dark pants and a hoodie, sunglasses and had two black bags with him.

Police said the woman he was with was perceived to be Asian in appearance, with a solid build and long black hair.

She was wearing a purple puffer jacket, a light T-shirt, blue jeans and carried a blue backpack.

Investigators have released an image of the pair who they want to talk to to assist in their inquiries about the incident. Anyone with further information about what happened is urged to contact police.

Hosier Lane’s street art makes it a popular tourist destination for visitors to Melbourne.
