A 28-year-old man has been charged with the attempted murder of a pregnant woman who was stabbed in a street in the village of Aberfan in south Wales.

The incident on Tuesday morning led to a search by armed officers, and two schools and a childcare centre were put into lockdown.

South Wales police said: “Daniel Mihai Popescu, from Merthyr, has today, Wednesday 6 December, been charged with attempted murder following an incident on Moy Road, Aberfan, Merthyr, yesterday morning. He will appear at Merthyr magistrates court tomorrow morning, Thursday 7 December at 10am.”

A spokesperson said the 29-year-old woman who was injured has been discharged from hospital.

South Wales police previously said the man and the woman were known to each other. The woman was taken to University hospital of Wales, Cardiff.

Police said there would be extra patrols in Aberfan to provide public reassurance. They have not named the woman or provided any personal medical information about her.

Jordan Jones, senior crown prosecutor for CPS Cymru-Wales, said: “Following a review of evidence provided by South Wales police, we have authorised charges. Daniel Mihai Popescu has been charged with attempted murder, stalking and witness intimidation.

“Criminal proceedings are active and Popescu has the right to a fair trial. It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.”
