SYLHET, Bangladesh (AP) — New Zealand ended Bangladesh’s innings with the first ball of the second day, before Kane Williamson helped guide the Black Caps to 78-2 at lunch in the series opening test.

At lunch on Wednesday, Williamson had serenely moved to an unbeaten 26, with Henry Nicholls not out on 11. The tourists trail by 232 runs

Earlier, the home side folded on its overnight score of 310 when skipper Tim Southee had Shoriful Islam out leg before wicket with the first ball of the morning.

Openers Tom Latham and Devon Conway then played Bangladesh’s lone pacer Shoriful Islam with ease but found it much tougher against offspinner Mehidy Hasan and left-arm spinner Taijul Isalm.

Taijul (1-23) bowled a tight line and the pressure eventually paid when Latham, who had hit three fours in his 21 runs, tried to sweep but could only top-edge a catch to Nayeem Hasan at backward square leg.

Conway followed him two overs later when Mehidy (1-22) had him caught by Shahadat Hossain at silly point as he tried to defend a quicker delivery when on 12.

New Zealand allrounder Glenn Phillips claimed 4-53 in just his second match to play a key role in bowling out Bangladesh for 310 after the hosts won the toss and batted first.

Opener Mahmudul Hasan made a team-high 86. Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mominul Haque contributed 37 runs each.
