EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) — Wesley Cardet Jr. scored 30 points and Chicago State stunned No. 25 Northwestern in a 75-73 upset Wednesday night.
Boo Buie made two layups 41 seconds apart to put Northwestern in front 67-65 with 2:30 left in a back-and-forth game. Cardet tied it 26 seconds later and then hit a 3-pointer with 1:23 remaining for a 70-67 lead.
Chicago State (4-9) sealed it with three late free throws from A.J. Neal and two by Noble Crawford.
Northwestern was favored by 24 1/2 points, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
Cardet shot 13 of 21 and Jahsean Corbett added 17 points for the Cougars, a Division I independent.
Buie had 23 points and Ryan Langborg scored 18 for the Wildcats (7-2), who lost to Chicago State for the first time. Northwestern had won 15 straight against the South Side program since the teams first met in 1981.
Brooks Barnhizer had 13 points for the Wildcats, who were trying for their first win as a ranked team inside Welsh-Ryan Arena since No. 6 Northwestern defeated Iowa 80-77 on Jan. 3, 1959.
UNLV 79, NO. 8 CREIGHTON 64
HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — Kalib Boone scored 25 points and UNLV led nearly the entire way against Creighton in the Jack Jones Classic.
Dedan Thomas Jr. added 16 points and nine assists for the Rebels (4-4). Justin Webster scored 13 and Keylan Boone had 10.
UNLV was a 13 1/2-point underdog, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
It was the first appearance at UNLV for Keylan Boone, whose twin brother is Kalib, after a federal judge in West Virginia ruled double transfers could play immediately. Keylan Boone also played at Oklahoma State and Pacific.
Ryan Kalkbrenner led the Bluejays (8-2) with 22 points.
Both of Creighton’s losses have been to Mountain West teams. The Bluejays also lost to No. 17 Colorado State 69-48 on Nov. 23 before winning three in a row.
NO. 15 FLORIDA ATLANTIC 94, FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL 60
BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) — Johnell Davis scored 16 points and Alijah Martin had 14 as Florida Atlantic rolled past rival Florida International.
Bryan Greenlee and Brandon Weatherspoon each scored 12 for the Owls (8-2), who opened the game on a 12-2 run and never looked back.
Jaidon Lipscomb scored 17 points for FIU (3-8).
FAU shot 64% to FIU’s 36%, outrebounded the Panthers 43-27 and held a 48-20 edge in points in the paint. It was FAU’s seventh consecutive win over its regional rival; the campuses are about 60 miles apart.
NO. 18 BYU 90, DENVER 74
PROVO, Utah (AP) — Jaxson Robinson made eight 3-pointers and scored 28 points, both career bests, to lead BYU past Denver.
Noah Waterman finished with 22 points and a career-high 14 rebounds for his first double-double with the Cougars. Spencer Johnson added 11 points, 10 rebounds and six assists.
BYU (9-1) shot 50% from the field and coasted to its seventh double-digit win of the season.
Jaxon Brenchley led Denver (6-5) with a career-high 21 points and seven rebounds. It was his first game back in his home state since joining the Pioneers as a graduate transfer from Utah.
