ST. THOMAS, Virgin Islands (AP) — Rori Harmon finished with 14 points, seven assists and five rebounds to power No. 12 Texas to an 84-42 romp over Arizona State at the Paradise Jam on Thursday night.
Harmon, the Big 12 Conference coaches’ choice for preseason player of the year, made 6 of 11 shots with a 3-pointer for the Longhorns (5-0). Shaylee Gonzales added 10 points and six rebounds. Gonzales has scored 2,057 career points, fifth highest among active players. Khadija Faye pitched in with 15 points and seven boards, while fellow reserve Ndjakalenga Mwenentanda scored 10.
Harmon scored 11 points and handed out four assists to lead Texas to a 40-23 advantage at halftime. Arizona State (4-2) shot 50% in the first half, but it took just 18 shots — none from 3-point range. Texas made 16 of 39 shots (41%) in the first half. The Longhorns outrebounded the Sun Devils 20-12 with 12 coming on offense.
Texas outscored the Sun Devils 21-6 in the third quarter to push its lead to 32.
Sophomore Trayanna Crisp and reserve Treasure Hunt both scored 11 to lead Arizona State. The Sun Devils took 31 shots in the second half but made just eight. They finished 0 for 3 from distance.
Harmon needs eight more assists to move into sixth place on the Longhorns’ all-time list.
Texas leads the all-time series 6-0. The last time the two teams squared off, Texas beat ASU 85-65 in the second round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament.
Texas will play High Point on Friday. Arizona State will play South Florida on Friday.
